About this event

Washington Association for Substance Abuse and Violence Prevention (WASAVP) is excited to announce its first offering for 2021 of "The Art and Science of Community Organizing." Training series participants will form Learning Coalitions with other Washington State community wellness promotion professionals to explore cross-cutting themes (critical self-awareness; cultural humility and equity literacy; leading change; and promoting sustainability) as a strategy to strengthen their knowledge and skills for community engagement, organizing and mobilization.

Attendees will benefit from the experience of seasoned prevention practitioners who through their cumulative experience, teaching, coaching and the unpacking of 6 Tool Boxes (1) Community Outreach and Engagement; 2) Coalition Building; 3) Group Facilitation; 4) Working with Volunteers; 5) Strategic Planning; and 6) Joint Problem Solving, facilitate a dynamic and very special learning opportunity.

This first WASVP training offering of 2021is spread out across seven (7) weeks.

  • Week One: Monday, January 25 and Tuesday, January 26 - 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, daily.
  • Week Two: Monday, February 1 and Tuesday, February 2 - 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, daily.
  • Week Three, and Four: no formal sessions; only scheduled Learning Coalition Check-Ins.
  • Week Five: Monday, February 22 and Tuesday, February 23 - 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, daily.

Priority will be given to practitioners who are available and committed to attending all six of the scheduled sessions and participating as an active member of their assigned Learning Coalition. The course has been approved by the Washington State Substance Abuse Prevention Certification Board, which allows participants who fully complete the course to earn 28-credit hours.

The team of facilitators include: Carol Owens, Linda Thompson, Liz Wilhelm, Michele Rastovich, Priscilla Lisicich, Ramona Leber, Wanda Rochelle and Ginlin Woo.

The first 30 individuals that complete registration will receive confirmations and relevant costs information. A waiting list will be generated and be used should openings occur. As well, names of interested parties who do not make the enrollment for this first training will be invited to participate in a second offering of the series to occur during the Spring of 2021.
